App Academy is a New York City-based coding bootcamp offering a full-time software engineering course on its campus. The course covers iOS development, back end engineering, big data, and more. The school structures its program with lectures, individual work time, and an emphasis on group projects. The school also offers online and in-person bootcamp prep courses, and a free online course called App Academy Open. Students don’t need any prior coding experience to apply, but App Academy will provide a basic coding curriculum for students to learn before attending the program. Students then complete a test, which gauges their coding ability after studying the prep material. This test will determine their eligibility to attend the course. The App Academy immersive software engineering bootcamp length is 16 weeks, not including prep or initial test time.
The length of App Academy’s full-time immersive software engineering program is 16 weeks. Students spend from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in class, Monday through Friday. Starting at 9:00 AM, students sit down in class for a lecture. This is the time for instructors to introduce students to new practical skills and theoretical coding concepts, and for students to ask questions about the course material they cover. The full-time program features an hour lunch break during the day from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. After lunch, students return to class to begin applying their new skills. This time is called Pair Programming, and students work with a partner to work on a collaborative project. The Pair Programming concept is designed to improve teamwork skills and help students work out problems. Pair Programming runs until dismissal at 6:00 PM.
To date, the App Academy has trained over 2,500 students. According to the App Academy website, 935 companies are hired (or have hired) App Academy graduates. App Academy stated that 98% of graduates were hired by ‘top tech companies’ and graduates make an average salary of $89,000 in New York City. Additionally, the full deferred tuition plan offers students a deposit refund and no tuition if they are unable to find a job after graduating.
App Academy offers students more than one way to pay for their coding education. The most economical payment option for students is upfront. The upfront cost of the full-time immersive New York City software engineering bootcamp is $17,000. All students under 22 without a college degree are required to pay upfront, along with people who are not permanent residents in the United States. However, other payment options can reduce the financial burden of tuition. App Academy offers a deferred tuition option called the placement-based plan. Under this plan, students put down a refundable $3,000 deposit, then make no tuition payments until they land a job making $50,000 or more. Once hired, they’ll make payments totaling $25,000. Students who are not ‘placed’ into a job after graduation will pay nothing if certain terms are met. App Academy also offers a hybrid payment plan with a $9,000 non-refundable deposit and total post-employment payments of $23,000. The hybrid plan reduces total tuition paid in favor of a higher upfront deposit.
