Description

The New York City Data Science Academy offers full-time immersive data science bootcamps, online programs, short courses, and a remote self-paced bootcamp. The 12-week immersive flagship bootcamp covers the fundamentals of data science and includes job placement services for students. The program emphasizes projects throughout the bootcamp to help students learn the content while simultaneously building their portfolios. Career support at this bootcamp includes one-on-one counseling and assistance. To date, the New York City Data Science Academy community has over 1,000 alumni and 5,000 members.

Additional Info

The bootcamp divided the course itself into seven units, covering all the major points of data science.   Unit one is called the “Data Science Toolkit” and covers Command Line, Git, MySQL, and similar introductory data science tools. Unit two covers data science and visualization with R and covers dplyr, tidyr, string manipulation, R Shiny, and ggplot2. Unit three covers data science and visualization with Python, and overviews Beautifulsoup, Scrapy, Numpy, NoSQL, MongoDB, Pandas, Matplotlib, and Selenium. Students will complete a project in this unit. Unit four covers machine learning with R, and unit five covers machine learning with Python. Unit six covers two career track options, which include deep learning and data engineering/big data.  Unit seven is reserved for a capstone project and career placement services.

The full-time immersive data science bootcamps at the New York City Data Science Academy last for 12 weeks, but students must meet prerequisite requirements before attending the full course. According to the bootcamp, students will need to complete roughly 40 hours of lectures before the coding challenge, which includes 200 coding questions. Topics covered during the challenge include an introduction to Python, using Python for data analysis, and using R for data analysis. Once pre-work is complete, students move on to the full course either online (remote immersive) or in-person at the New York City Data Science Academy’s campus. During the full-time bootcamp, students spend from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM in class from Monday to Friday and should expect to spend time on projects during the evenings and weekends.

Students at the New York City Data Science Academy receive a variety of personalized career services from the school. The school helps students build a resume and LinkedIn profile, plus training in mock interviews, elevator pitches, and mock coding challenges. Students also have networking opportunities through project presentations and meetups with the bootcamp’s hiring partners. Graduates from the New York City Data Science Academy work at over 24 major companies, including Google, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, IBM, Samsung, Facebook, Spotify, Pfizer, Nielsen, and more.

The full upfront cost of the immersive data science bootcamp is $17,600. Overall, paying upfront will be the least expensive option for most students. However, students have more than one payment option. Instead of paying upfront, students can opt for a financing plan.  The New York City Data Science Academy offers loans through the Credit Climb program and Skills Fund Student Loans. The Climb Loan payments are between $375 and $439, and the Skills Fund payments are $397.88. All loans last for a period of 60 months. Payments will vary based on several factors, including what interest rate students qualify for.

NYCDSA was referred to me by professionals in the industry. I chose the remote bootcamp and learned a vast amount of topics including SQL, R, Python, and Hadoop & Spark. During my studies, I published 4 blog posts of project work ranging from a visual analysis of the American Music Awards to predicting housing prices. I had an assigned TA who I met with weekly to discuss my courses and homework, which was very helpful. Interview prep was also a great asset to the program. Upon graduating I received a grad package with a NY State Board of Education certificate included. I received a job offer within a month of graduating as a Growth Analyst.

During this program, we learned data science/machine learning not only in R but also in Python. The codes that I got from lecture codes, homework, and peers here are valuable, and I find them very helpful for my research. When I cross-checked the lecture notes from NYC data science bootcamp with lecture notes obtained elsewhere, I find that the lecture notes from NYC data science bootcamp are the best and solid in successfully explaining fundamental theories.

I think the teachers here are very knowledgeable, and their lectures are well-organized and efficient. Many of the teachers also shared their experience in the data science industry and gave us ideas about what it is like to work in the data science industry, which was another good point of this program. When students needed helps, TAs, managers, or teachers were available either in person or on slacks.

I think this is a highly recommendable program for anyone interested in data science. But, before this program starts, enrolled students are highly recommended to do their best in the preliminary lectures to be better prepared. In addition, students need to work really hard in lectures, homework, and projects.

    I’d highly recommend this program.

I took the Python: Data Analysis and Visualization class taught by Tony Schultz this summer. The course content is thorough, well formed and covered a lot of areas within the short amount of time. Tony was great with explaining all the concepts. Often times he covered more than just one way to solve a problem and encouraged us to develop our own coding styles. Definitely recommend this class to all working professionals interested in learning Data Science using Python.

I graduated from the graduate program in media management at Gebelli Business School of Fordham this year and got the certificate of data visualization at Parsons School of Design.
I picked NYC Data Academy because it is the only institution which offers bilingual programming training. I made the comparison between NYC Data Academy, General Assembly, and the Flatiron School. And I think NYC Data Academy has the most comprehensive curriculum I need to be a data scientist.
I like how the class material is designed — It teaches you to learn coding step by step, and trains you with case studies. The depth and width of the study material are the best I have ever seen.
The thing I think they can improve is that I hope there could be more one-to-one sessions. Sometimes I feel I would like to solve the problem with my solutions, and I need to talk to someone. In this case, I can even pay more to review with teachers for my solutions in person.
What’s more, I think I will be happier if they offer healthier snacks. Normally we have oatmeal bars, but I think it is too sweet.
In the immersive three months of training, I gained the knowledge of being a data scientist and worked with companies on real data projects. Being treated and trained in a professional way has benefited me from having the boldness to face the job market and build my own projects.
It has been a great experience for me, and I highly recommend them.

I recently completed NYCDSA’s ‘Introductory Python’ course taught by Tony Schultz in July 2019. First, the course itself provides a really great foundation to learn python and you really don’t need prior coding experience to learn the basics. Second, Tony is a great instructor and walks you through everything. He takes the time to explain difficult concepts and provides simple explanations to understanding code, which is obviously very helpful for people looking to build out these technical skills. Highly recommend!

I enrolled in the five-weekend course for Data Analysis and Visualization with Python taught by Tony Schultz that spanned from June to July 2019. Tony is experienced, energetic and hard working and did a great job in presenting the material. He was also very helpful before/after class answering questions related to the homework as well as more general topics related to data science. Of note I appreciated that he covered various ways of solving classroom and homework problems which helped highlight Python’s flexibility. The course helped me develop a solid foundation in Python. As usual, to get the most of this class you do have to spend several hours outside of class to review the material covered in the prior class before attempting to do the homework.
